Step #2: Picking the Right Outfits

The outfits you pick should really highlight your personality and the theme you’ve picked for the shoot. Here are a few tips:

#1 Definitely wear what you’re comfortable with. If you’re wearing something that you can’t freely pose in or feel uncomfortable in, you might end up looking very rigid and unnatural in the pictures.

Wearing bright, solid colors really make the pictures pop!

#2 Play with different colors, textures, and layers! Make your outfits colorful- I’ve noticed that colors like red and turquoise and yellow really pop in pictures.

Add a cardigan or jacket (jean, leather, fur, etc.) on top or a fun scarf to add some layers. Incorporate different textures by wearing a fluffy sweater, knit top, or a velvet skirt. The more variety you bring in, the better the pictures look.

The black varsity-styled jacket that Shriie brought helped make the pictures more interesting! She was able to create different looks due to the jacket. For instance, she would sometimes have it off her shoulder, around her waist, held behind her, etc.
Adding elements like scarves and vests add lots of layer and texture to the photos.

#3 I usually recommend bringing around 2-3 outfits for the shoot in order to bring a diversity of styles and a variety of looks in your photos.

Just to get you started:

  • Cute tops (halter neck, crop tops, button-downs)

  • Bandeaus and lacy bralettes

  • Patterned bottoms (palazzo pants, maxis, embroidered shorts)

  • Bold rompers and jumpsuits

  • Flowy dresses

  • Shoes, sandals, heels, boots
